Understanding The Pallet Recycling Process

When wooden pallets reach the end of their useful life, they should be repurposed in an environmentally friendly way. Simply throwing them into a skip bin or rubbish truck is a waste of materials, and should be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, recycling pallets is a much more sustainable outcome. But how does that work?

At Born Again Pallets, we’re here to help you understand the pallet recycling process. We receive second hand pallets in large quantities and depending on their condition, either repair them for another life cycle, or  dismantle and salvage the timber to sell in our retail department.  We have our own innovative pallet recycling centre, that allows us to provide efficient recycling services.

In this piece, we’ll explain the pallet recycling process from top to bottom.

What does the process of recycling pallets look like?

It’s a comprehensive process that involves several steps and a tried and tested approach. The ultimate goal is always to make sure we use as much of the existing material as possible and produce as little waste as we can.

Receiving and collecting used pallets

The journey begins by collecting second hand pallets from sources like warehouses, factories, and distribution centres. Without the pallets themselves, we can’t get much done! These can either be dropped off, or we can arrange for pick up, entirely free of charge.

Sorting second hand pallets

Once the pallets arrive at our facility, our team sorts them based on their condition. We use thorough yet efficient processes that make use of our experience to identify and sort pallets based on their condition. Pallets that are in good shape might be reused after some quick repairs, while ones that aren’t in the best condition will likely be broken down to be recycled or turned into other, useful items that can be found on our website.

Repairing pallets that can be used again

At this stage, pallets that are slightly damaged but still fixable undergo a thorough inspection. Our skilled staff will replace broken boards and secure any loose nails, ensuring the pallets meet our high-quality standards before they are ready for reuse. They’ll also make sure the pallets look presentable.

Dismantling pieces for timber

While reusable pallets are being restored and returned to duty, we dismantle those that are beyond saving. Pallets that can’t be fixed will be dismantled to salvage usable timber for any future repairs or will be graded and sent to our retail department for sale to the public.

Creating furniture from recovered wood

One of the best parts of our recycling process is transforming recovered wood from second hand pallets into rustic, functional furniture. Our onsite workshop is designed  to create custom commercial furniture for both indoor and outdoor use at Wineries, cafe’s or office’s.

Making new pallets from existing material

When the wood from used pallets has been sorted, broken down and processed, we can use this recycled material to make new pallets! These pallets are either made entirely from recycled timber, or from a hybrid mix of recycled and new wood. This process allows us to continue to promote a circular economy, reducing waste and the need for virgin materials, and providing more cost-effective options for our clients.

The environmental impact of recycling wood pallets

At Born Again Pallets, we know that recycling wood pallets has significant environmental benefits. It conserves natural resources, reduces waste sent to landfills, and even contributes to lowering the carbon emissions associated with the production of new materials. Our recycling processes and facilities can help ensure that your business is finding a truly sustainable outcome for your used pallets.

How can I reduce the cost of pallets?

Choosing to buy recycled or refurbished pallets is a great way to reduce your outlay when purchasing pallets. Along with that, maintaining and repairing pallets regularly can extend their lifespan, meaning you won’t need to outlay money on new pallets as frequently. In the end, this can mean more money in your pocket for other business expenses.

Where do old wooden pallets go?

Unwanted wooden pallets that cannot be reused or repaired are typically taken apart and either thrown away, or recycled. During the recycling process, the wood is either upcycled into new products or repurposed for other uses, such as fire wood (untreated timber only). Metal components are also recycled where required.

Are wooden pallets reusable?

Yes, wooden pallets are highly reusable! They can be repaired and used multiple times for transporting all sorts of goods. When they get to the point where they’re no longer structurally sound or have too much damage, they can be recycled into new pallets, furniture, or other wood products. This is a great way to prevent waste and reduce costs.
